Hearing operatic voices in intimate spaces is a special experience! Four times a year, PORTopera supporters graciously host a “Serenade” in their homes or other special venues. Opera lovers enjoy short concerts by PORTopera singers, socialize with other opera fans, and partake of delicious food and drink.

Italian Opera in America 18401850 The Claremont Hotel, Southwest Harbor, Maine If you missed this wonderful concert/lecture program in April in Portland you can catch it this summer on Mount Desert Island at the stunning Claremont Hotel in Southwest Harbor. Robert Mellon, Maria Natale, and Carlton Moe will perform arias from the Bellini, Donizetti, and Verdi operas that American audiences first heard in the 1840s. Drawing on extensive research in period newspapers and diaries, Arlene Palmer Schwind will provide entertaining historical commentary and reveal the “harmony” on the stage, the “discord” behind the scenes, and what opera-goers and critics had to say about it all.
